Feature Writing Techniques and Style

The technique of feature writing is similar to the technique of any expository or narrative writing since it makes use of:

  • Introduction or a lead
  • Body of the article
  • The conclusion

Lead

In this portion an introduction to the topic under discussion is given. The list of questions whose answers are likely to be given by the feature writer is also provided. The central idea or the keynote is also introduced to the readers. This portion must be forceful enough to awake interest in readers to read the complete feature.

Body

Feature writing is similar to any other expository or narrative writing as the main body of the feature is developed in the same way as that of any good piece of writing. It should exemplify the three cardinal principles of

  • Unity
  • Coherence
  • Emphasis in its separate paragraphs and in itself as a whole.

This may be accomplished by having a central theme or main id a carried throughout the article, eliminating extraneous material and closely relating all the material in the article to the central theme and bridging the transition from each, paragraph to the next one easily and smoothly and avoiding abrupt changes of thought.

Conclusion

The conclusion of the feature, also, resembles the conclusion of other forms of expository and narrative writing. It may be a condensed summary of the whole article, reviewing briefly the salient facts brought out in the article. It may be the climax or the highest point of interest in the article as it frequently is in a short story. It may also be a ‘cut back’ or ‘flash back’ to the introduction i.e. a restatement of the lead phrased in somewhat different language but serving to emphasize the important statement made. at the beginning and to round the whole article.

According to some other writers, The News Feature has the following parts

  • Structure
  • Lead
  • Transition
  • Body
  • Conclusion
  • Length
