Adolescence | Development During Adolescence

What is adolescence

The word adolescence comes from the Latin word which means to grow. So the essence of the word adolescence is growth and it is in this sense that adolescence represents a period of intensive growth and change in nearly all aspects of a child’s physical, mental, social, and emotional life. Therefore this period must be carefully studied by all the concerned people, i.e. the parents and the educators, especially.

Who is adolescent

It is relative question, when a child becomes adolescent relative to climatical, and physical conditions. But generally the children from the age of thirteen to nineteen are called adolescence. Or the period between childhood and adulthood is called adolescence.

Development During Adolescence

Physical Growth in Adolescence

The main features of physical growth in adolescence are following:

  • The body get its final shape
  • Maximum limits in regard to size, weight, and height are achieved
  • Bones and muscles increase
  • All the glands become extremely active
  • Sexual changes occur

Emotional Development in Adolescence

The main features of emotional development  in adolescence are following:

  • Anxiety, fear, love and anger reach to its peak
  • Sensitive and moody
  • Emotions fluctuate frequently
  • Feelings are very strong and reactions also become sharp
  • Behavior may become rebellious

Social Development in Adolescence

The main features of social development in adolescence are following:

  • Social relations get widen with the social sense
  • Learning of social norms start
  • Get interested in opposite sex
  • Intimacy develops
  • Want liberty from control

Cognitive Development in Adolescence

The main features of cognitive development in adolescence are following:

  • Intelligence reaches to the climax
  • Logical and complex thinking process starts
  • Imagination develops. Writers, poets, and great scholars signs appear
  • Love adventures
