Pedagogical Models of Teaching, Definition, Uses and Elements

Meaning

A general meaning of term “Model” is a representation, generally in miniature, or to show the structure as a copy of something or typical form and style.

Definitions

There several definitions of teaching model given by different educationist

  1. Nelson L Bossing (1970, P. 72) “Teaching model is a pattern or plan, which can be used to shape a curriculum or course, to select instructional materials and to guide a teacher’s action”.
  2. “It consist guidelines for designing educational activities and environment. It specifies was of teaching and learning that are intended to achieve certain kinds of goals”. Nelsons L Bossing
  3. According to Morse, “Models are prescriptive teaching strategies designed to accomplish particular instructional goals”.
  4.  Robert S. Woodworth says “To confirm in behavior, actions and to direct one’s action according to some particular design or idea”.
  5. According to Filburt Highet, “It is a set of inter-related components arranged in a sequence which provide guidance to realize specific goals”.

How to use teaching models

  1. Teaching models specify the learning situations for observing the pupils response
  2. They help in realization of learning objectives
  3. They help the teacher in planning and organizing effective teaching by selecting appropriate content teaching strategies and audio visual aids in education
  4. They help in planning curriculum

Fundamental Elements of Teaching Model

Generally, there are five elements which are:

Focus: This element defines specific objectives of teaching learning process

Syntax: It explains the structure of activities actually involved in teaching-learning process. These activities are arranged in a sequence which are to be followed strictly.

Social System: it defines the three mains aspects of teaching learning process

  1. The classroom climate (whether authoritarian, democratic or laissez-fairic).
  2. Role of teacher and the learners (whether active or passive)
  3. Form or motivation (whether extrinsic, intrinsic or self-motivation).

Support System: This describe the following elements

  1. Which helps in making teaching learning effective (i.e. use of audio visual aids in education, library, laboratory, workshops, excursions, field trips etc).
  2. Helps in evaluating teaching on the basis of acquired learning (i.e. testing devices).

Application: It tells us the use and application of the models for specific objectives, and specific subject matter in specific situations.
