Meaning of Assimilation
Assimilation is the integration of two dissimilar cultures into a single culture comprising characteristics of both cultures. When a minority ethnic group is assimilated into the dominant culture, the minority group loses its distinctiveness and through it cultures can blend and lose their separate identities. I will not wrong if I say that it is an exchange process with minority groups ultimately getting some of the customs of the minority group. This exchange has occurred to a large extent in the United States. After arriving in this country USA, new ethnic groups have not only adopted American customs but influenced Americans to adopt some of their customs.
Definition of Assimilation
According to Mack and Young, “It is the compulsory or combination of two previously different groups into one”.
Ogburn and Nimkoff define assimilation as “two different individuals or groups which become similar by eliminating their cultural differences.”
Fairchild defines it “as the fusion of one or more divergent groups or societies in their attitudes, ideas and habits is called assimilation”.
It is the process in which attitudes of the individuals are united and they share common sentiments and values.
Types of Assimilation
1. In broad sense migration of refugees from one country to another or people from rural to urban areas is included in the category of assimilation in its broadest sense.
2. In local sense, assimilation is that which takes place within the family or group like new married couple adopts the some culture and assimilate one another.
